SMC Gower became the first company to take up residence at the Round Foundry when phase one of the development was completed in December 2003. The company has been based in Leeds since it was established in 1964 and employs over 70 people, working on a broad portfolio of commercial work. Philip McGuinness, Director of SMC Gower Architects gives his opinion of the area as a business location.
"We’re proud to be based in Leeds. It's a fantastic city for both business and pleasure. We already counted St James Securities - who developed the scheme in a joint venture partnership with CTP Ltd - as a client and they asked us if we would like to be based here. They didn't need to ask twice.
"Holbeck Urban Village is superbly situated, a few minutes walk from the city centre and train station, and has excellent connection to the motorway networks. It is a bustling little community that seems to be growing a little bit more everyday. Originally we had 30 employees when we moved here but the location and award-winning offices are a great plus point in attracting new staff.
"As architects ourselves we also appreciate the area that we are in. There aren't many people who can look out of their window and see Italiante Towers or take a short walk to an Egyptian Temple! The area has a rich architectural heritage and a unique atmosphere that is hard to find ina big cosmopolitan city such as Leeds.
We are delighted with the progressive redevelopment of the area and it is only going to get better. I would certainly recommend the area as a business location as it has the right kind of 'attitude'. Everyone knows each other and we all seem to work together rather than against each other. The community has fostered a real sense of networking and development which is refreshing in business life. Adding to this are the growing social developments in the area, with cafes, bars and restaurants starting to emerge and new plans, including a pavillion and arts trails, all adding to the mix."
