Formed in 1994, Orange is now the second larger mobile telecommunications service provider in the UK. A global company, Orange could have based their WAP Portal 'Orange World' anywhere but they are based in the Grade II listed Marshall's Mill in Holbeck Urban Village. Nick Nurden, Operations Manager tells us why.
"In 2000 we planned to move offices and wanted somewhere close enough to the city centre and the transport and rail links, but also far enough out of the city centre to be able to enjoy the work environment and avoid the hustle and bustle of the big city.
"Holbeck Urban Village was just developing and Marshall's Mill came on our radar as a building with character and history that suited the culture of our business. The area was also billed as an up and coming area that was to be developed in a unique way with a community feel that appealed to us.
"We moved 120 of our staff into the Marshall's Mill office and we manage 'Orange World' from here, which includes content, graphic design and technical programming. We are also responsible for the management of other data services for Orange and have a significant product management team based in Leeds.
"I'd definitely recommend the area to businesses in our field of work. It will be a great area to work in eventually - it can't come soon enough for us. It has improved with extra facilities in the Round Foundry development but it will be good to have a really lively business and residential community in the area. It will be good for us to have other similarly innovative companies around to work with and the sense of community helps to build those links and grow business."
