Sweet Street Bridge

Project Status: On site due for completion November 2008

A study completed by highways consultants Mouchel Parkman suggests that Sweet Street Bridge could be re-opened to through traffic. This would provide an alternative route for motorway bound traffic which currenly cuts through the heart of the urban village along Globe Road.

The study recommends that access be restricted to cars, rather than tall vehicles. The study also proposes the use of either a one-way system or traffic lights placed either side of the bridge to control traffic flows.

Consultants also point out the need for carriageway improvements to the road itself and crash barriers to minimise the risk of accidents. An accident occurred here in the 1970s and every care and attention has been taken to ensure that there can be no repeat of this occurence.

North Midland Construction company have been awarded the contract to undertake work on Sweet Street starting 27th May 2008 expected to be complete by 21st November 2008.

The improvements include:

  • re-opening the highway beneath the railway bridge
  • introduction of a one-way system which will allow more pedestrian access and ease congestion
  • vehicle activated sign systems to make sure that high sided vehicles are warned they cannot access the road ahead
  • a new turning circle, localised carriageway widening to help vehicles through the restricted area
  • new cycle paths
  • footpath improvements using York stone, granite kerbs and improved street lighting.
