representation of holbeck urban village

Public Space

Redevelopment of the public realm within Holbeck Urban Village forms a key element of the regeneration programme.

Public realm is basically the part of the urban environment that is accessible to the public. It includes streets, parks, pedestrianised areas, cycle lanes, car parking, public crossings and roads. Holbeck Urban Village aims to become a flagship regeneration area and as such aims to create a public realm of the highest standards with regard to design, safety, community, traffic and landscaping. The key public realm projects for the urban village are:

  • Canal Bridge
Connecting the urban village to the city centre.
  • Pedestrian crossing
Implementing a zebra crossing at a major junction on Water Lane.

  • Sweet Street
Re-opening a street to the south of the urban village which leads directly in to Holbeck and on to Beeston.

  • Neville Street
Extensive refurbishment of the main gateway to the city centre.

  • Street scene improvements
New paving and street furniture incorporating artists work.
  • Viaduct
Re-developing the disused railway viaduct to create a high level walk way into the city centre.

This section of the site explores the various public realm projects that are proposed and the map below shows where that activity is taking place.
