Staff and pupils at one of Leeds' newest schools were celebrating this month as the winners of the annual RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) awards were announced.
Picking up the judges' Special 'Inclusive Environment' Award, the school and children's centre was recognised for outstanding achievement in the provision of facilities that can be used by everyone in the community regardless of age, gender, disability or ethnicity.
Completed in November 2006 the school merged 285 pupils from local schools Hillside Primary and xxx. In addition to this the children's centre, managed by Lisa Smith, has 70 children using the facilities alongside several outreach and family orientated programmes.
The children's centre provides a range of services including flexible childcare, job centre plus for parents seeking employment, and weekly midwife drop in clinics providing quick on the spot advice.
New Bewerley School and Children's Centre are extremely proud of the facilities and feel that the award reinforces the fantastic work being done to regenerate Beeston and Holbeck.
Patrick Wilkins, Head Teacher at New Bewerley School is delighted with award: "The new school and children's centre has meant so much for the community and the children who come here. It is fantastic that all of the hard work and effort from the city council, the architects, the building contractors and the staff here has been recognised by RICS through this award."
