An urban village wept when David Street Café closed its doors seven months ago. Now we can breathe a sigh of relief as the much loved café returns with a new location at the Round Foundry and a contemporary new brand.
The new café hasn’t lost its loyal customer base and has even managed to retain some of the original staff who have been there for over ten years. The menu has remained largely the same with a few healthy additions and the new premises have improved wash room facilities and better disabled access. The café is also doing its bit for the environment and has installed state of the art extraction and ventilation systems.
Martin Dunderdale, owner of the café, employed Kilmartin, Plowman and Partners as the architects for the new premises as they also designed the nearby Cross keys.
Martin is delighted with the result saying, “it’s just great to be back, everyone has been really supportive and ever since we opened we have had a steady stream of the old regular customers coming to see us. The new premises are great and I am amazed at how much we managed to fit in the space. As a business we haven’t changed really, we are still providing the same good quality service at the same value for money price.”
Marshall’s Mill based agency, An Agency Called England, are also excited about the return of the community’s favourite café. They approached Martin with the idea for a new brand for new premises and have some exciting ideas for the future.
Dominic Frary, Creative Director at An Agency Called England says, “the café is almost a cult icon. People in and around the urban village know and love the café and the staff, so creating a brand for them was a fantastic project. We did it all free of charge as it was so important to ensure the café was here to stay and we are happy that we have created a strong contemporary brand that continues the iconic status of the Café within the region.”
