Construction body announces job creation plans

>>> Posted 12/10/06

Construction Leeds, part of the Leeds Initiative, has announced plans to target local unemployment and create more than 300 skilled jobs in the city by the end of 2007.

The partnership organisation which was set up under the Leeds Regeneration Plan has secured funding of nearly £1.5M ahead of its official launch next month. The money will be used to implement its twin strategies of delivering training in conjunction with learning providers and working with private firms to create secure and sustainable job opportunities for local people in the construction industry.

It is now actively seeking partners in both the education and construction sectors to help achieve its targets and maximise the benefits of Leeds’ current construction boom for local residents.

Rob Wolfe, Project Manager at Construction Leeds, said: “As much as £7.5 billion could be spent on construction projects in Leeds over the next five years. We believe it’s vital that we maximise this opportunity by bringing older people, the unskilled and the long-term unemployed back into the job market and keep as much revenue as possible within the city.”
