representation of holbeck urban village

Wochenklauser

>> Posted 22/06/06

Where: Holbeck Urban Village
When: 9th July - 30th July

Four members of Wochenklauser, an Austrian arts group, will spend a four week period working with local artists to draw attention to the viaduct that runs through the urban village and to unite the communities from either side of the structure.

Since 1993 and on invitation from different art institutions, the artist group WochenKlausur have developed concrete proposals aimed at small, but nevertheless effective improvements to socio-political deficiencies. Proceeding even further and invariably translating these proposals into action, artistic creativity is no longer seen as a formal act but as an intervention into society.

In the case of the viaduct they will be using art to overcome the social and physical barriers that the viaduct represents. At present the vaiduct cuts across the urban village and seperates the comunities of Holbeck and Beeston Hill to the south from the vibrant and bustling city centre.

The four week residency will include working with local artists to forge new relationships bewteen people who live and work on either side of the viaduct. Themes of home and work will be used to explore connections and differences.

During the second week of the artists' residency in Leeds they will attend a locally held event for the arts and practioner sector in Holbeck Urban Village.
