Where: PSL Project Space Leeds
When: 27th February-April 2008

PSL is to unveil an exhibition of images of 1960s Leeds by Swiss photographer Eric Jaquier which have never been seen in the UK before.

Eric, now 61, came to Leeds in 1969 as a 23-year old and spent a year here working as a door-to-door salesman. He spent a month in Burley, where he also pursued his love of photography, taking hundreds of shots of street life in the Leeds suburb.

The resulting images give a revealing insight into working class life in the 1960s from children playing makeshift games to housewives in aprons and curlers and advertising stands that recall a golden age of consumerism.

Other aspects of Leeds life at the time are also represented; there are suited business men, formally attired in bowler hats and with umbrellas tucked under their arms, and people hanging out on the steps of the Town Hall and in its doorways.

But in a nod to the mood of revolution in the air back then, Eric Jaquier’s photographs also document the sweeping changes beginning to take place in the city centre, showing the clearance of large areas of land and old industrial buildings to make way for new concepts in modern architecture and high-rise living. There are even photographs of the era's 'Mods' on their polished chrome scooters.

Entry is free and all are welcome. The gallery is open Wednesday - Saturday 12-5pm or by appointment, during exhibitions only.
