Paper Dolls Exhibition

>> Posted 13/07/06

Where: Round Foundry Media Centre
When: 13th July 2006 onwards

This is a series of images by artist Karen Melvin which will be on display at the Round Foundry Media Centre. The exhibition is part of the media centre's ongoing support for local artists.

The driving force in Karen’s work is story telling. As her family grew up, Karen began to tell and convey personal stories through a diverse and broad practice, ranging from introspective still life images to collaborative environmental art. There are two strands to Karen’s practice, one very domestic and the other a magical domain, where nature, colour and scale play their part in a tactile 'playground'.

Karen’s current practice revolves around constructed large format photographic still lives as a way of indexing treasured objects and debris, of story telling, tracking life events and making a connection with fairy tales and mythology.

Paper Dolls forms a series of dramatised domestic tales, incorporating hand made cut out paper figures. These paper figure ‘dolls’ are derived from Karen’s childhood play allowing photography’s relation to time and memory to be addressed and considered. Karen’s approach becomes a way in which to anchor shifting memory to a physical process in the present.
