Arts Club@ The Cross Keys is a quarterly public event for the arts sector to explore and debate themed lines of enquiry within contemporary practice and projects with relevance to Leeds.
Each quarterly event has a different theme and invites three speakers to use it to interrogate their practice or projects. The event will be chaired to enliven the debate and keep it from straying; it aims to be informal with open discussion and drinks at the bar.
Each speaker will present for about 20 mins; they are as much part of the audience in their ability to ask questions as they are presenters.
This forthcoming event is focused on a discussion around Curatorship and is entitled
Practices of curatorship: The role of the curator in developing an independent art scene.
This debate provides an opportunity for critical reflection on the changing role of the artist and curator in contemporary society and in particular seeks to outline present practices within Leeds.
The traditional boundaries between those who create and those who mediate, in terms of organizer, facilitator or collaborator, become increasingly difficult to define. How does this affect the development of art education, professional development for the artist, the traditional status of the gallery curator and the perception of audiences in relation to exhibition practices?
We would like to open out the debate and pool the knowledge that exists in the city and beyond. There is a £2 entrance fee on the door.
