Light Neville Street

Light Neville Street

Testing has started on the east wall art installation in preparation for the unveiling of the refurbished street. If you were one of handful of people walking through Neville Street recently you would also have been treated to the sound of U2’s Beautiful Day as the speakers are also being tested for the unique sound installation created by Hans Peter Kuhn.

The artists himself is also in Leeds for the next two weeks putting the finishing touches to the eats wall and the sound installation. Keep watching this space for the finished piece.

'Light' Neville Street panels and canopy

Five years of design and debate is finally coming to fruition as the ‘Light’ Neville Street project sees the first of it’s unique and innovative panels installed.

The design team, led by Leeds-based Bauman Lyons, has painstakingly sourced innovative materials and solutions to a blight that the majority of UK cities face – a grimy underpass which has become a major route for businesses and residents alike as cities expand.

Neville Street is used by more than 13,000 people daily to travel to and from work and by default has become the main entry point to the city centre for first time visitors and would-be investors. The panels, filled with Quietstone (TM) which was used to drown out the noise of the commuter rush in the London Underground, are being installed at the same time a a large overhead canopy.

This canopy will house the technical power behind the two innovative lighting schemes and the sound art installation. It will also save many a pedestrian from the woes of the ever-present drip from the overhead railway lines.

Already Neville Street is starting to present a much better welcome to the city and to the south.

Neville Street moves forward

The steel work is currently being installed at Neville Street so keep your eyes peeled for the panels coming soon!

PS – This is a video for no other reason than I was trying to take a photograph and this is what I got – back to technology school for me :-)

‘Light’ Neville Street back on track

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

The ‘Light’ Neville Street design team is delighted to announce the appointment of Safe Road BLG (formerly Balmer Lindley Group) as lead contractor for the remainder of the project.

As you may be aware the previous lead contractor Wrekin Construction suffered from the effects of the credit crunch and stricter lending policies and went into administration in March. Since then Leeds City Council and the design team behind the ‘Light’ Neville Street project have been in discussions to find an alternative contractor to continue work on this high profile, innovative scheme.

A revised schedule is due to be completed in May with work starting again towards the end of the month and completion set for late September 2009, so watch that space for signs of life at Neville Street once again!

‘Light’ Neville Street: Project update

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009
Construction for the ‘Light’ Neville Street project has halted temporarily as the lead contractor, Wrekin Construction, called in administrators on 10th March 2009. Leeds City Council are currently in negotiations with another potential supplier to continue with construction and a contract is expected to be agreed towards the end of April 2009. As a result of these unfortunate circumstances the revised completion date for ‘Light’ Neville Street will now be September 2009.

We would like to reiterate that although the halt in construction is regrettable, Leeds City Council and Yorkshire Forward remain committed to the delivery of ‘Light’ Neville Street as are all members of the design team.

‘Light’ Neville Street will be a unique, innovative and inviting gateway to Leeds, welcoming visitors from all walks of life and will make a lasting improvement to the journey of the 13,000 people who continue to use this thoroughfare each day.

Progress on-site at Neville Street

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Many of you will have been walking through Neville Street wondering where all the work is. Over the last six months the large aluminium panels have been under construction off-site in factories and manufacturing plants. This week the work on-site begins afresh with the kerb stones being added to the newly extended pavements and the steel work due to be brought on-site over the next couple of weeks so keep watching that space!

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Saturday 1st November, Saturday 8th November, 12-6pm

Free guided tours start at 1pm and 3pm, from the Cockpit on Swinegate.

Four new pieces of sound art around Neville Street and Holbeck Urban Village invite visitors to re-tune their ears to the sounds of the city, as imagined by five young Leeds artists. Listen to stories of other people’s journeys as you pass along Swinegate; hear birdsong created from traffic noises in a tree by Victoria Bridge; experience Granary Wharf’s sound history back to industrial Leeds and beyond.

The free sound-trail will lead visitors through Swinegate, Granary Wharf and along the canalside to PSL [Project Space Leeds].
