What Kind of Place?

This event was held in April 2006 to showcase the proposals for the public realm of the urban village. The proposals were viewed by a wide range of stakeholders and feedback was given in the form of interviews and questionnaires.

The thoughts and comments received are recorded in this section as are the responses from the Holbeck Urban Village project team.

Neville Street:
The proposals for Neville Street include sound proofing materials, lighting improvements and an art installation by German artist Hans Peter Kuhn.

Dark Arches:
This historic site linking Holbeck Urban Village to the city centre is proposed to be renovated and transformed to shops and commercial businesses.

Viaduct:
The listed viaduct that sweeps through Holbeck and the urban village is proposed to became and elevated skywalk linking the communities from the south to the city centre.

Water Lane:
One of the main streets running through the urban village, Water Lane is heavily congested and current proposals suggest making this a one way thoroughfare.

Sweet Street:
Sweet Street is a key a entrance to the urban village form the south but has for years been cut off due to the closure of the road running under the bridge. Proposals are to re-open this route.

Hol Beck:
There are several proposals for how to preserve this ancient watercourse that provides and essential drainage system for the whole of east Leeds.

Canal bridge:
The canal and the River Aire run parallel and proposals to create a footbridge across the canal that links up with the footbridge across of the river aim to improve the pedestrian access to and from the urban village.

History:
The area is known for its historical importance and its catalystic role in the Industrial Revolution. The Holbeck Urban Village project team hope to preserve this history.

Street design:
The team are aiming to create a high quality public realm in the urban village and proposals for street furniture and public squares were unveiled at the event.

Creative arts:
Holbeck Urban Village is set to become the creative and digital media quarter for Leeds, with this in mind the project team hope to create an environment for all tyes of creative professionals and artists.
