Lack of understanding of the benefits of doing this.
The idea is to stop it being used as a way into the city - it will be one-way opening on to Sweet Street. Becoming a one-way street will not only ease congestion at peak times. but it will allow for the widening of the pedestrian route along the Hol Beck.
Will it be a two way street for cycles?
Yes.
Access to Butcher Street will be made more difficult.
Yes but this will be compensated fro by better access to other key thoroughfare sin the urban village such as Marshall Street and Sweet Street.
A reduction in traffic will mean a reduction in crime and prostitution.
This should be being dealt with other safety work anyway.
Opportunity for more public realm and trees?
Yes.
Loss of parking facilities could be a problem.
On street parking in the area is being reduced and confined to short stay. Longer term there are hopes for a multi-storey car park next to the viaduct off Sweet Street to allow people to park up and walk into the city using the viaduct.
Will it encourage speeding? Possibly needs traffic calming measures.
Junction alignment, surface treatement and unmarked zones will give a pedestrian friendly feel which will calm traffic.
