Lack of understanding of the benefits of doing this. |
The idea is to stop it being used as a way into the city - it will be one-way opening on to Sweet Street. Becoming a one-way street will not only ease congestion at peak times. but it will allow for the widening of the pedestrian route along the Hol Beck. |
Will it be a two way street for cycles? |
Yes. |
Access to Butcher Street will be made more difficult. |
Yes but this will be compensated fro by better access to other key thoroughfare sin the urban village such as Marshall Street and Sweet Street. |
A reduction in traffic will mean a reduction in crime and prostitution. |
This should be being dealt with other safety work anyway. |
Opportunity for more public realm and trees? |
Yes. |
Loss of parking facilities could be a problem. |
On street parking in the area is being reduced and confined to short stay. Longer term there are hopes for a multi-storey car park next to the viaduct off Sweet Street to allow people to park up and walk into the city using the viaduct. |
Will it encourage speeding? Possibly needs traffic calming measures. |
Junction alignment, surface treatement and unmarked zones will give a pedestrian friendly feel which will calm traffic. |
