Creating a truly sustainable community will be the single most important aspect that sets Holbeck Urban Village apart from other high quality mixed-use areas within the city such as The Calls. Developers will be required to produce a sustainability report to support planning applications, covering energy efficiency, waste management and the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Eco Homes and BREEAM

Eco Homes balance environmental standards with the need for a high quality of life and a safe and healthy internal environment.

BREEAM is a regulatory body that score residential developments based on their approach to energy efficiency, water supply and drainage, durable construction materials and a number of other categories. All developments within the Holbeck Urban Village boundary must rank as 'Excellent' under the Eco Homes BREEAM standard. This can be achieved through methods such as triple glazing, implementing sustainable drainage programmes, using low carbon materials and alternative energy sources.

Sustainability is not just about conservation and responsible construction. It also applies to building the community and ensuring that skills are developed and opportunities can be accessed by all. Through the creation of a thriving business and residential quarter, employment and affordable housing, Holbeck Urban Village will ensure its sustainability into the future.

Resource Efficiency

Developers are obliged to consider waste management both in the construction process itself and later, once developments are built and occupied. At least 10% of the total value of materials used in construction must be derived from recycled and re-used products and materials. There is also a requirement that at least 10% of the predicted annual energy requirements of each development should be met by independent renewable energy sources such as solar or water power.

By harnessing the assets of the surrounding area and incorporating sustainable design principles from the very beginnning, Holbeck Urban Village is expected to become widely recognised as a model of best practice for urban development and regeneration.
