The Holbeck Urban Village Community Energy Scheme is aimed at delivering a low carbon solution to the old and new village's enrgy requirements.
The energy scheme will meet the standards set by the current government guidelines to reduce UK carbon emissions.
The European Union Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the new Building Regulations 2006 Part L are driving improvements in building energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission reduction.
The new Building Regulations require significant reductions of CO2 compared with 2002 regulations. It can be difficult to achieve the reductions, but one way of achieving these reductions is the use of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and Community Energy schemes.
The Holbeck Urban Village Community Energy Scheme development work concentrates on the improvements achievable through sustainable community energy schemes.
This includes investigations in the use of gas-fired CHP to serve the community with heat and power; investigations into alternative energy production from wind and river power; the potential of biomass in the generation of heat and the use of the river for cooling.
A feasibility study is currently underway into the various options and all stakeholders will be consulted as part of the study.
