Local school pupils have been exploring their history in honour of Holbeck Gala now in its 33rd year, making it one of the oldest community events in Leeds.

Holbeck will see some big changes over the next twelve months as the PFI project starts to take shape. This year’s gala will be the last with the ‘Holbeck Towers’ in the back ground and housing along Brown Lane is also scheduled for demolition.
With this in mind Holbeck Gala Management Committee invited local school children to design this year’s event flyer celebrating the area’s history and future development.
Kevin Grady, director at Leeds Civic Trust led local history tours to help pupils understand where their community came from: “This area has a such a rich heritage from steam entrepreneurs and textile tycoons to modern day business people creating a new community of enterprise. It has been a pleasure to share the local heritage of this area with the next generation.”

Josh Gillingham from Ingram Road Primary School beat of competition from other pupils to win the competition. Josh said: “I liked doing the tour and learning about the people who used to live here, I really wanted to win and didn’t go out for morning break so that I could finish my design”
Holbeck Gala will be held on 11th July at Holbeck Moor.
